Staying Healthy After 40

Reaching 40 is a pivotal point in life. When you reach this age, your responsibilities, lifestyle, and body are all exponentially different from someone in their 20's. Here are some of the causes of common health problems, and solutions on how to keep healthy and prolong your life!

Problem: Stress

Responsibility can creep up on you. In your 40’s you could have a demanding job, a house, kids, bills, and more that can be a cause for both physical and emotional stress. Chronic stress can wreak havoc on your immune system and lead to long-term damage to your organs. Stress takes a particular toll on your heart by inhibiting your heart’s variability rate which can cause your body’s systems, including blood pressure and cell decimation, to become unbalanced. No one said growing up was easy.

Solution: Take Time for You

It may be impossible to avoid stress completely but there are plenty of activities you can engage in to manage your stress levels and enjoy some peace of mind. Some of these include yoga, meditation, or a relaxing hobby. Anything that helps to give your brain and body some “downtime” is beneficial.

Problem: Bad Dietary Habits

When you were 25 you could eat whatever you wanted, but in your 40’s that’s not the case. Your metabolism is slowing down and your body can’t process all of the toxins and chemicals in heavily processed foods. Even overconsumption of relatively healthy foods with a heavy load of calories can cause you to gain weight or lead to other severe health problems such as diabetes.

Solution: Stay Regimented

Keep yourself on a measured diet of lean meats, whole grains, and plenty of raw fruits and vegetables. Fiber is also important! It may be necessary to begin taking fiber or vitamin supplements if it feels like you are not getting enough from your diet. The better the fuel you put into your body, the better it will perform. It may be hard to break the bad habits developed in your youth, but your body will thank you.

Problem: Increased Risk of Disease

While in your youth your body could heal at an exponential rate, this is not the case as you age. Your systems need to work harder and damage from unhealthy choices made during your younger years could show lingering effects.

Solution: Be Health Conscious

Visit your doctor regularly. Keep up with your annual screenings for various types of cancers, diabetes, or heart disease. As you age, your body can weaken and be more susceptible, especially if you aren’t treating it right with diet and exercise. The best way to control your risk of disease is to be on top of your healthcare, quit bad habits, and take the appropriate natural health supplements to improve your quality of life.

Just because you are getting older, doesn’t mean you have to sacrifice quality of life! Make the necessary changes, and you can live long and healthy.
